On 7th February 09 a group of 16 girls and another group of 16 boys, all between 8 and 14 years of age, joined Jagriti Vihara as our pupils to get special education in Adarsh High School, McCluskieganj, run by Jagriti Vihara. Their education will include training in sports and games. Both the groups have already been accommodated in our hostels. This programme will get financial support from the State Government.

Regarding the education of the 16 girls and 16 boys called the Games and Sports groups we will soon receive information from the Government. We are still waiting for the details of the programmes. We have accepted this programme for one year as on experimental basis. Let us see how much we, Jagriti Vihara and the Government, cooperate with each other. Everything depends on the assurances given by the Government.

Besides the above mentioned groups the usual group of 15 girls from families existing below the poverty line will continue to stay and study at Jagriti Vihara. As we have already informed you this group of 15 girls depends entirely on us for getting food, shelter and education. We are thankful to JVV Sweden for giving both financial and moral support to this project of ours.

The camp school will continue functioning for the next year beginning from 1st of April,09. Some of the girls will be admitted in the High School at McCluskieganj. A few of the girls who will not find place in the High School will continue with us. Some of the girls waiting for admission in the Camp School will be joining us on the 1st of April. Our intention is to admit 15 girls from the families below the poverty line.

We remember with gratitude our very rewarding association with the Ljungskile group which visited us during the last week of October 08. At the same time we extend our sincere thanks to Mr. Markku Nykanen, Mrs. Inger Dejke and Mr. Anders Dejke for their visits and inspiring participation in carrying out different activities at JV.

Our State, Jharkhand, is under President’s rule while the democratically elected Legislative Assembly (State Parliament) remains suspended. Since the imposition of the President’s rule there has been slight improvement in the law and order situation of the State and the people who have been disillusioned by the performance of their political representatives do not seem to be in a mood to pressurize the present Administration to hold fresh election.

For the present we are engaged in spreading awareness about the fast increasing deforestation and environmental pollution in the coal mining areas. Very many farmers, Self Help Groups and industrial workers of this region have approached us for organizing health camps to combat diseases like malaria, diarrhoea and tuberculosis. We are trying to find ways and means to face the problems confronting the people in contact with us.

The children school at Jagriti Vihara is running successfully. All 47 children are very happy and enjoying their study with training in sports. The no. of girls are 31 and the no. of boys are 16. Both the groups have already been accommodated in our hostels.

Election
Our country, the largest democracy in the world, is voting for a new democratic Govt. at the Centre. So far we have voted for two phases out of six phases of general election. These two phases are completed under the shadow of threat and violence by the people who do not have faith in the democratic system. On the eve of the second phase of the election dated 23.04.2009 the Naxlites hijacked a train with nearly 700 passengers on board in Latehar district of Jharkhand for about 4 hrs. and then the passengers were released. Thanks God! No killings of passengers. Land mines blasts and encounters between the police and the Maoists took place at several places in Jharkhand, Chhatishgarh and Bihar. Many policemen were killed in these incidents. The Maoists blew up the Untari Rly. Stn. In Palamau district and burnt down many trucks laden with bauxites. They also set a blaze a school building and a health centre in Chatra District. This place is not very far from our place.

In Jharkhand the election is now over. About 49% people casted their vote and showed their interest in democratic system. The ballot wins over the bullet. The rest of the country is still to vote in another 4 phases of election.

We hope that the election will be over peacefully and a new Govt. will come to power at the Centre who will work for the upliftment of the country.

A hot summer
Our State Jharkhand is facing very hot summer this year also.In the beginning of summer the temperature has rose upto 41 degree Celsius and it is still rising. We are afraid, if this situation is in beginning what will happen in the coming months. The extreme heat and lack of drinking water in the region have made our work more difficult for the present. In spite of several inconveniences we have cooperated with the villagers in carrying out development activities in the villages.

The Govt. claims that at present the inflation rate is at minimum but the food prices in the market is still very high – very strange.

Dear friends, Namste!

This year the monsoon has not reached in time and almost half of the country has been declared as drought affected area by the Govt. of India. Due to insufficient rain our area has also been badly affected.
People are expecting very low culivation this year. The prices of essential commodities has gone up beyond our expectations and the situation will be more difficult in the future.

The widely spread disease Swin Flu has also reached in our country. People are very much scared about the disease. Some people have died in western part of our country. We are spreading awareness by organising meetings among villagers about this disease.Presently our region is more affected by Malaria and we are planning to organise a health camp for the benefit of the villagers.

The National Highway ( NH 33) which connects Jharkhand to other part of the country badly affected due to underground fire between Ranchi and Hazaribag( 50 kms. from Ranchi). This Highway passes through coal mining areas of Hazaribag. Due to unsafe illegal mining of coal it caught fire about one year ago. The Coal mine company and local administration did not take care of it and after one year the erruption of fire and smokes took place at many places on the highway. The Govt. is trying to supress the fire but could not succeed in their endeavour.The entire mining area is still under fire. Due to this the traffic has been diverted to different routes and it takes many hours and much inconveniences.

Two ministers of the former Government of Jharkhand have been arrested by the Intelligence Bureau. They were found guilty of involvement in corruption and making huge property. They are under judicial custody. Most of the ministers of the former Government are under the scanning of Intelligence Bureau.This is a good sign for the future.

Everything is all right here at Jagriti Vihara. All the activities are going on as per schedule.

På JV var det full aktivitet i november. Toaletter byggdes, några inom JV:s område, men hela 40 små toaletthus av tegel i den by, Jobhiya, där JV ligger.
Detta är ett statligt projekt som genomförs över hela Indien. År 2015 ska det finnas sanitet överallt.
  Det är viktigt för att förhindra sjukdomar och ge särskilt kvinnor möjlighet att i skydd uträtta sina toa-ärenden och sköta hygienen. Männen kissar ju ogenerat överallt, men kvinnor måste gömma sig och blir inte sällan antastade. Dessutom har toamodellen separering av kiss och bajs. Det går åt bara lite vatten och efter en tid finns nyttig kompost att använda på åkrarna.
Allt detta är gott och väl och dess­utom ger byggandet folk arbetstillfällen, men problemet är att byborna är skeptiska mot detta lilla hus med ventilationsrör. Det går åt mängder av upplysning för att bryta en vana och införa något nytt. Där har JV ett jobb!
  Vi fick veta av toaprojekt-ledaren Babu, att en komponent i bygget kommer från Stockholm Environment Institute.

Nytt litet kök
Ett annat bygge som pågick var »köttköket« längst bort på området vid det hus som var tänkt som kooperativ affär. De 32 eleverna i volleybollskolan måste ha extra energirik kost, alltså kött några gånger i veckan.
  Två kockar är anställda för denna matlagning. På JV är man traditionellt veganer liksom många av adivasi. Så det är ett stort avsteg från en viktig princip för att uppnå något annat viktigt. Ledningen för JV ser den här satsningen på ungdomar från olika byar i Jharkhand, som rätt väg att kunna påverka med goda vanor när de bor på JV, samtidigt som de studerar på JV:s högstadieskola i McCluskieganj. De har dessutom en manlig och en kvinnlig volleybollärare.
Efter dessa studier har ungdomarna lätt att få bra tjänster i samhället. Och särskilt för flickor är det en nyttig kroppslig och mental träning att våga ta sin plats i samhället.
  Flicklaget är så framgångsrikt att det vunnit en distriktsturnering och några ur gruppen fortsatte till en landsomfattande turnering i Bangalore, när vi var där.
Detta skolprojekt drivs av staten. Problemet är dock att Jharkhands valda politiker sköter sina uppgifter så fullständigt undermåligt och korrumperat, att JV ännu bara fått betalt för tiden april–aug för maten till volleybolleleverna. Och inget för boendet. Detta är pressande och svårlöst.
  I mars ska JV:s ledning besluta om detta samarbete med staten kan fortsätta. För eleverna är det en oerhörd chans och för JV som har resurserna är det trevligt med så många glada ungdomar. Jharkhands framtid!

Val i Jharkhand
Att välja en annan regering handlar det ytterst om. I Indien hölls val i november. Gerillan försöker på alla sätt att förhindra valet. Osäkerheten om framtiden, rädslan för olyckor och död, våldet hela tiden aktuellt. Vägar kunde stängas av och mineras. Att rösta kan leda till att få högra handen avklippt. Tåg stoppades och intogs av gerillan som vädjade om frigivning av en fängslad ledare.
  Poliser och soldater inkallades för att garantera säkerheten vid valen. Men vem törs rösta? Några gånger gjorde statsmakten räder in på JV:s området. Fullt beväpnade poliser i jeepar på vägarna i den lugna och grönskande mangoparken är en otäck syn. Men inga gerillamän gömmer sig där. Och lojala personer i alla de byar, där JV hjälper till med bevattningsanläggningar och kvin­nor­s självhjälpsprojekt, ringer i mo­bilen och varnar JV om något farligt är på gång.

Jeepen
På JV finns en jeep som är helt nödvändig för kontakt med byarna, för resor till Ranchi där JV:s kontor finns, för inköp, för transporter av människor och varor. Inte minst som ambulans om någon av de 50 skolbarnen på JV och om anställda och deras barn skulle drabbas av sjukdom eller olycka. Men i valtider har staten rätt att beslagta alla privata fordon som behövs för att frakta soldater och poliser, alltså för att säkra demokratin.
  På allt sätt har JV försökt få tillstånd att använda sin jeep utan risk att den tas. Men förgäves. I hela fem dagar köade personal från JV i Ranchi för att få en namnteckning på ett intyg som gav dem rätt att använda jeepen.
Kanske hade en muta hjälpt, men sådant värjer sig JV mot. Så nu har jeepen fått »semester« till 18 dec, då valet lär vara över. Istället måste man anlita taxi, som är dyrt och besvärligt, för livsnödvändiga resor. Kontakten med byarna måste ställas in.

Polis tar över högstadieskolan
När valet i närmaste ort, McCluskie­ganj, skulle äga rum 25 nov, hade myndigheterna förberett genom att installera 500 beväpnade poliser i kamoflagefärgade uniformer i JV:s högstadieskola.
  Där bodde de i skolsalarna och lagade mat på gården, upprättade vägspärrar utanför och hade naturligtvis stängt skolan för barnen. Allt för att kunna hålla stånd om gerillan angrep. Val­boxarna placerades i skolan.
  Rektor var mycket rädd att skolan skulle sprängas av gerillan. Detta skedde med ett tiotal skolor, dock inte i de byar där JV arbetar.
