Newsletter from Jagriti Vihara

The International Women's Day was celebrated yesterday in almost all the cities and in several rural areas of Jharkhand.  As usual the print media published several sad and alarming news regarding the plight of a large number of women in Jharkhand. We came to know that a woman, Sumri Devi, branded as a witch, was bashed up by some villagers at Tilayabeda village in Tundi, Dhanbad district. In  remote villages where people are still victims of illiteracy, ignorance and superstitions such things happen very often.
   An NGO, Free Legal Aid Committee, has proposed that people who commit crimes against women and inflict  torture on them should be given stringent punishment by courts of law. This NGO, FLAC, conducted a random survey in 332 villages of 199 Gram Panchayats in Jharkhand and came in contact with 176 women who were tortured by superstitious villagers. In a study conducted by the Govt. of India the number of women tortured and killed in Chhotanagpur during the period between 1991 and 2000 was 522. This information was gathered from the Districts of Ranchi, West Singhbhum, Lohardagga and Gumla. The existing legislation against such crimes has seldom been implemented. The Government and capable NGOs are urgently needed to take up this issue in all earnest.
   As we have informed you earlier Jagriti Vihara has been making sincere and untiring efforts to spread awareness about the plight of poor rural women in its target villages on all occasions such as meetings, seminars and social gatherings.
   The camp school at Jagriti Vihara as well as several rural education centres at Korri, Ojhasaram, Gulzarbag and McCluskieganj are functioning well as usual.
   Our extension programme is also being implemented satisfactorily in accordance with the budget plan and the time schedule. Our field workers have been given the opportunity to participate in a mushroom cultivation  initiative taken by  Jagriti Vihara during the months of January and February, 2005. This initiative was a part of our skill training scheme.
   Exactly as the readers of this Newsletter have been waiting to hear from us we at Jagriti Vihara have also been waiting to hear from the friends who have visited our organization  during the past few months. Groups of pupils and teachers from Ljungskile, Kalix and Honefoss visited several of our project-sites to show their interest in our work. Before leaving  Jagriti Vihara they assured us that they would keep in touch with us. Would it be possible for them to let us know their remarks and comments meant to guide and encourage our volunteers ?  We would be thankful for their response.

Våra nuvarande främsta aktiviteter är
att lösa problem med hälsa och att arbeta för etik


Vi har slutfört den första delen av vårt bevattningsprojekt i de olika byarna. Genom att bönderna samarbetar mera kan de bättre utnyttja vattenresurserna, bland annat genom uppsamling av regnvatten i dammar för bevattning och genom terrassering av terrängen för att hålla vattnet kvar. Vi hjälper bönderna med att få kontakt med regeringen för att skaffa dieselpumpar.
    Monsunen i år har varit dålig i Latehar distriktet. Böndernas sådd har misslyckats på grund av torkan, och riset har fått för lite vatten för att växa. Därför blir ris­skörden detta året ganska dålig. Majsen däremot har klarat sig lite bättre. Mango­träden led under torkan och gav väldigt lite frukt i år.

Tidningarna och media är fulla av berättel­ser om korruption bland tjänsteman och politiker, och om våld i samhället. Vi försöker i skolorna göra eleverna uppmärk­samma på dessa problem, och  vi använder mycket tid till att diskutera etik och moral.
    Mellan den 12 och 14 augusti anordnade Jagriti Vihara ett seminarium om ”Education based on human Values”, som hölls i centret. Från statliga och privata skolor i Latehar och Ranchi distrikten deltog 26 lärare i seminariet. De visade stort intresse för dessa frågor, och våra kontakter med de olika skolorna i Jharkand kommer att växa till ett nätverk. Vi kan utveckla denna pedagogik för att motivera våra skolelever till att  diskutera och förstå värdet av etiska och moraliska frågor.

Kvinnorna i självhjälpsgrupperna kämpar för sina rättigheter att få låna pengar på banken i förhållande till sina besparingar på kontot. Vi försöker bistå dem med hjälp från Jagriti Viharas sida. Två grupper har lyckats låna pengar och har också betalat tillbaka till banken. Det gäller en grupp som har getter, och även de kvinnor som gör tegelpannor. För sygruppen går det också bra.
    Vår odling av champinjoner har gått bra. Vi kan producera mera, och det är ganska lätt att sälja till hotellen i Ranchi. 

Människor runt Jagriti Vihara lider mycket av tuberkulos, malaria och tyfoid (kallas också tyfoidfeber eller nervfeber) samt olika magsjukdomar. Vi försöker kontakta läkare och försöker dessutom förstå orsaken till sjuk­domarna och hur de sprids. Malaria och tyfoid har utvecklats till epidemier.
    Många på Jagriti Vihara, och till och med rektorn på vår skola Mr Shukla, har insjuknat. Vi har försökt hjälpa så många som möjligt med transport, undersökning och medicin. En liten organisation som Jagriti Vihara kan inte hjälpa så många, men vi försöker kontakta regeringens hälsodepartement för att få mera hjälp.
    Vi är glada att de som har varit i kontakt med oss och fått vår hjälp är återställda.

En glad hälsning från Saloni i köket. Hon har inte varit så glad utan rent av ganska deprimerad. Men med hjälp av Jagriti Vihara har det nu lyckats att skaffa en god och lydig man till henne.  Hon har fått ett billigt men mycket fint bröllop och hon hälsar till alla nordiska vänner, som har mött henne i köket, att hon nu är väldigt lycklig och glad. Starvation
Global warming, climatic change and erratic behavior of the monsoon rains have caused enormous problems in our part of the world. Some parts of our country were flooded but at the same time the vast areas in many other parts faced drought during the last monsoon period. Both flood and drought ruthlessly destroyed the crops standing in the fields. The result is that most of the inhabitants of the affected areas are facing starvation.
   Marginal farmers and other people with meagre income are not in a position to prevent malnutrition causing serious health problems among the rural population. It is  painful specially to see the children suffering from malnutrition and diseases caused by it.

Self Help Groups
Jagriti Vihara has taken steps to help the suffering  people, specially women of our areas, make collective efforts to solve some of the problems. The women in our target villages have been forming Self Help Groups to undertake income generating activities. Such activities can not be started without adequate financial support. Therefore we have been frequently visiting local banks to persuade them grant loans to the Self Help Groups.
   The old and out dated ways of working in the banks and other bureaucratic hurdles created by the administrative units of the Government  slow down the progress drastically. Anyway, we have been persistently trying  to overcome the difficulties.
   We console ourselves by the assurances of help from our sympathizers. We feel that there is no substitute for hope, courage and willpower needed to continue the work.
   Most of the Self Help Groups of women in contact with us are optimistic about the future of our newly created State, Jharkhand. The reason is that good signals have come from our neighbouring State, Bihar.
   A few weeks ago the Assembly election in Bihar state took place and fifteen years old govt. of Laloo and his wife, Rabri Devi, has been voted out of power.
  A new govt. has been already formed under the leadership of Mr. Nitish Kumar, the party leader of Janta Dal United. The media and the people of Bihar have been celebrating the victory of the new leadership with the hope that rule of law will be reestablished in Bihar and the state will be brought back on the track of  progress.

Local markets
Some of the Self help Groups of Women have been producing things such as roofing tiles, soap, wax candles, earthen pots, mats, cloth, garments for children and food articles namely vegetables, pickles and mushrooms.
   Although they have been able to sell their products in the local markets they are not satisfied with the price they get from the buyers. Probably the quality has to be improved and new strategies for marketing the products have to be enforced. Jagriti Vihara is trying to find ways and means to face this new challenge.
